This year’s RMHS golf team had a record of 5 wins, 11 losses, but had a notable player who continued to carry the team to greatness. Lehapi Veikune is a junior at Rancho Mirage High School who has been playing golf for only two years. This years golf team consisted of four new players with only two returning players. Veikune played in 13 of the 16 games, never scoring higher than 50. Veikune played well the entire season and qualified for league after only two matches.
After the regular season ended for golf, Veikune along with two other RMHS golf players played in the league matches. Both of the other RMHS players were eliminated while Veikune placed fourth with an 80 the first day and a 79 the second day. After getting fourth, Veikune moved on to the CIF matches. Veikune scored a 90, but did not make it to the next round as she was 9 strokes short of moving on.
Veikune (11) intends to take her golf skills to the next level as she said, “My dream is to become a professional golf player.” Veikune also has a very supportive father who has supported her golf career and inspired her to be the golf player she is today. Veikune said that her father has always had time for her and takes her out to practice and to tournaments.
Veikune has also created many memories while playing golf this year at RMHS. She said, “My favorite memory while playing golf is getting to play with an amazing and funny team and also getting to play with a lot of good players.” Veikune showed teams all year round that she was a force to be reckoned with.
“I played a great season and got to experience a lot of things that I never knew about, and I am focused on getting better and having more confidence in myself” she said as she reflected on the season. Veikune intends on continuing to play golf out of season and will play on the RMHS girls golf team again next year.
